I like to use four frames for the glitch effect myself so here I’ll start with frame 17. The first thing you’re going to do now that you’re ready to get to work is select the frame and corresponding layer that you want to make the glitch effect on. I use anywhere between 20-30 depending on the scene. The caps I’m using here are 20 frames each so when put together it’s a total of 40. You also need to make sure you don’t use too many frames per gif because you’re going to be combining them in the end.

I like to use this effect when I’m transitioning to a sad gif so I make one gif black and white. Hopefully this all makes sense and is actually helpful! This tutorial is made assuming you already know how to make gifs and will be done using photoshop on a mac. For example, if the highest numerical value of your color offset (regardless if its color offset 1,2,or 3) is the value 9, your GIF cannot have less than 9 frames, otherwise the glitch would not work.I’ve gotten some requests to make a tutorial for the effects I’ve used in these sets here and here. *Please note that the highest numerical value you use for your color offset must not exceed the maximum number of frames in your GIF. Glitch 3 splits the image in half horizontally, and moves one of the parts a random amount to the left or right. Glitch 2 also picks a random horizontal section and applies random displacement to every row of pixels, making it look like interference.

Glitch 1 picks a random horizontal section of the GIF frame and moves it to a different position slightly squeezed. The number next to each glitch type refers to the probability that it will appear in any given frame, meaning each GIF will be unique! In the image above, each glitch has a 50% chance to appear in every frame. Glitch Probability controls the horizontal bars and glitches that appear randomly in your GIF. The same applies for Color 2 and 3 offsets. If you wish to make first color 'ghost' appear to follow closer, you would decrease the Color 1 offset number. In the image above, Color 1 offset is set to 3 Frames, meaning the first color (in this case red) will be delayed by 3 frames. Offset refers to how much delay each color band will have, and can be adjusted by Milliseconds (for Burst GIF) or Frames (for standard GIFs). The two main parts of the Glitch filter are Offset and Glitch Probability. Click it once and you will see the settings appear in the Filter Settings box. Scroll all the way to the right to find the Glitch filter. Open PBU Settings and navigate to the Filters tab. Continue the tutorial if you would like to make adjustments to the Glitch filter.
