When he felt he was approaching land, he would release the crows which would fly in a straight line to the nearest land, indicating the route his ship should follow. A Norwegian sailor known as Raven-Floki, the first Norseman to sail to Iceland, would deliberately starve crows aboard his ship. One method, in particular, was effective though a little cruel.
